Have you felt your heartbeat?
Our heart rate is part of our daily lives, it represents something that is crucial in our lives, our heart pumping blood.
It is also a reflection of our mental and physical state, and everyone’’s heart rate is different from each other’s. We usually don’t pay attention to it. But maybe we should…
We created an interactive experience where two people look at each other and try sync up their heart rates. Each person is given a blob that pulsates to their hear rate; when the heart rates become synced, they combine to create a beautiful pulsating effect.
01 | IDEA
We wanted to visualize the pulsation of heartbeats, to make heartbeats more intuitive and to create interaction between people.
Using pulse sensors to map heart rate, visualizing heartbeat.
Two people control their heartbeats to try to be synced up.
The heartbeat of two people are mapped with two objects, which are combined when the two heartbeat sync.
What does organic look like?
02 | VISUALS REFERENCE
We tried to find some reference for our visual effects. Since heartbeats are a of biometric signal, we wanted to find some visual objects that were ORGANIC.
After brainstorming, we decide to create a BLOB to represent heartbeat. A blob has an organic shape, and the dynamic form is pulsation.
03 | CONCEPT
Our concept is to incite people interact with each other by trying to sync their heart rates . by standing in front of each other and looking into each other’s eyes.
Ideally we would want to project visuals on the floor, with each person standing inside their bubble, but our first iteration was projected on the wall because of site constraints.

… CRITICAL PART OF CODE
In the code, the most difficult part was to draw the blobs. As for fade-away edge, we used fill(0,10); and rect(0,0,width,height); to draw a translucent rectangle instead of background(0); every frame. As for visuals of blobs, we used sin() & cos() and amp to make it organic, and it is also related to signals detected by pulse sensor.
06 | FINAL EFFECT EXPLORATION
We tried different final effects when two blobs combine together. Finally we chose the Breathe because it is back and forth, and two expansions are in different size and color, which is more like a combined effect and heart pulsation.
